What is CBT, and why do I need it?

The world of coaching has been exploding over the last few years. Practically everyone we know has hired a coach for something, business, health, career, finances…you name it, there’s a coach for it.

CBT has also been getting a lot of buzz lately, and for good reason!

It’s changing lives.

CBT stands for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Basically, it’s learning how to take your thoughts captive, which was God’s concept! Paul says In 2 Corinthians 10:5 “We demolish arguments, and every proud thing that is raised up against the knowledge of God, and we take every thought captive to obey Christ.”

Our thoughts are often untrustworthy. We have to learn how to be conscious of them, question them, and decide if they are going to stay or go (obedience).

To help you better understand, here are the ABC's of CBT;

A-Activating Event- an actual life event, a conversation, a habit…

B-Belief/Thought- our interpretation of the event or automatic response

C-Consequence/Behavior-what my thoughts prompt me to feel & do

Once you know your ABC, it's time to get curious. Does this thought line up with what God says? Is it even true? This may take some digging in scripture, but if it isn't matching up to what God says about his children or what our ultimate goal is [pointing people to Him], you can be sure it's not truth. I call this the “God Filter”.

Draw a conclusion from here. In light of what I know to be true, what decision will I make? Is this a wise decision?

Finally, what will I do next? This step is SUPER important! If you skip it, you will likely remain on that hamster wheel, overthinking every single scenario. Sometimes, there are lots of wise decisions we can make. Get in the practice of picking the one that fits best, and move on. If it doesn't work, or you need to adjust, you can! The beauty of life with God is that He is with you wherever you go, in whatever you do. My friend calls this “bowling with bumpers”, and it’s my favorite because it immediately calms the nervous system. “Whatever I choose, I’m bowling with bumpers. It’s okay to make mistakes. God will correct and re-direct as needed.”

Failure is actually not a problem, only information that helps us grow.

When you are living your life surrendered to God, he’s going to guide you every step of the way, and if you’re afraid of making the wrong choice, and getting in the way of God’s plan, then you’ve made yourself WAY too powerful. There’s literally nothing you can do that can stand in the way of God. He ALWAYS makes a way.

Now, you can absolutely take this information and run with it all on your own. In fact, I’ve created a 30 day journal to help you. It’s linked below for free! It’s a no brainer to grab it. It will definitely get you started in the right direction.

However, the benefit to hiring a CBT coach, like myself, is that you’re often too close to your own thoughts to be able to obtain the outcome you truly desire.  A trained unbiased perspective will be able to detect what you may gloss over.  My specialty is to help you get to the root of what’s actually going on. As a certified CBT coach, I’m trained to ask you the right questions to help you see through a new lens.

I’ve seen it over and over in my practice, the thought you think is the problem is actually just scratching the surface. Usually, the root is much much deeper.

Massive transformation is waiting for you on the other side of that revelation! I’m basically a pirate digging for the buried treasure that can change the trajectory of your whole life.

It only takes one decision to hire a coach who can help you. I’m here waiting on the other side of that decision. If you’re ready and you’ve decided to get to the root of the problem, schedule a free discovery call.

Either way, before you go, be sure to download the free sound mind journal so you can start uncovering the first couple of layers to your next transformation.
