Are Your Limiting Beliefs Holding You Hostage?

frustrated young woman with her hand on her face struggling with limiting beliefs

Our lives are always moving in the direction of our strongest thoughts. What happens when those thoughts stem from a limiting belief you accepted about yourself that isn't even true?

First, let's define what a limiting belief is. It's any thought you've adopted as absolute truth about yourself, religion, other people, socioeconomic differences...really any area of life. These beliefs tend to form in childhood/adolescence and are often informed by the people we have an attachment to (parents, grandparents, siblings, etc). If you grew up with grandparents and parents who constantly made negative comments about wealthy people--"Ugh, must be nice to be rich and do whatever you want, unlike the rest of us working stiffs"--you may have an unconscious bias against the rich and an "us vs. them" kind of mentality when it comes to work and life.

"Limiting beliefs hold you hostage"

If you want to get out of the "stuck" feeling in your life, you need to take a look at what limiting beliefs are lurking under the surface. Once you have them pinpointed, ask yourself 2 powerful questions; 1) Is it true? 2) Is this thought serving me anymore?

Common limiting beliefs

"I'm not good at ___ and will never be able to learn it"

"Taking risks never works out well for me"

"I'm just too much (or not enough) for people, so I can't make friends"

"I just need enough money to get by. I don't need extra."

"I can do it all myself. I don't need help"

Responsibility Breeds Empowerment

If you're unsettled or discontent in your current life circumstances, your limiting beliefs are likely playing a key role. However, it doesn't help you to blame them. What will help is recognizing they're there, they've informed your decision making up until now, and you have the option to choose a different thought--and make different choices going forward. This is SO empowering!

For the believer, the next question you need to ask is "What is God trying to undo in my thinking?"

God is always preparing us for what He has prepared for us. If we're stuck in thought patterns that will not serve our assignment, He will begin the work of breaking the agreement in our hearts and minds so that we can move forward. Give yourself grace in this process. It takes time.

When God freed the Isrealites from slavery, He could have just walked them straight to the promised land (an 11ish day journey), but instead, they walked in circles for 40 years because they couldn't see themselves as anything but slaves. An entire generation had to die before they could go in and possess the land, why? Because a slave would not be able to inhabit the palace & position of a king, and God needed the Isrealites to realize that because He was with them, they were royalty.

What blessing are you blocking by what you are believing? It's time to dig deep, and start asking the hard questions. Invite the Holy Spirit into the conversation. He is working everything together for our good and His glory.
