Are plant based cleaning products better? A case study…
A little over 6 years ago, our family laid my husband's 41 year old brother to rest after a 5 year journey with brain cancer. 3 months later, we laid my 53 year old uncle to rest after a long battle with bowel cancer.
Every single one of my grandparents also fought cancer at one point in their lives (leukemia, metastatic breast cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer). Only one of them didn't die from their cancer diagnosis.
Currently, about 2/3 of cancer cases in the U.S. are caused by environmental factors. This can be anything from exposure to toxic chemicals, poor diet, no exercise, to smoking and alcohol use.
IT SHOULD NOT BE THIS WAY
We had a choice to make for our family. My husband and I knew that we could very easily be on the same path as many in our family if we didn't do everything we could to create an environment of health.
There may be many things outside of our control, like genetics, but we can focus on controlling the controllables.
So, what’s in our control? Anything we have the ability to chose! This includes diet, exercise, not smoking, limiting alcohol, and anything we bring in to our home, like cleaning products.
So, we took a step. We cleared out all the cleaning products in our house, and replaced them with one plant based cleaner...Theives Household Cleaner from Young Living.
Honestly, at first, I was hesitant...
"Will this actually clean things?"
"Do I really only need this one cleaner?"
"Is this actually going to make a difference for us?"
With all our cynicism and skepticism, we gave it a go for 3 months. I even said "let's just do an experiment. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work, and we'll move on."
But, something interesting happened...
We felt better.
We could think more clearly.
My post-baby hormones started to balance out after 18 months of struggle.
Our moods were more even, and when fall rolled around, my husband didn't have as big of an emotional dip (S.A.D.)-side note, NingXia Red made a HUGE difference as well.
So, did it work? Yeah. I'd say it actually far exceeded our expectations, and we’ve been using it for 8 years now!
This 14 oz bottle pictured above may not seam like much, but it’s actually a concentrate. One capful (about 1 TBS) in a 16 oz amber spray bottle is all you need! Simply fill the rest with water. This 14 oz bottle of concentrate actually makes about 30 bottles of cleaner, making it less than $1 per bottle. I typically only go through 2-3 bottles of concentrate per year.
I also love that it is SUPER versatile. I can clean any surface of my home including, wood, glass, stone, and fabrics, making it the ultimate multitasker. For me, that’s a huge win! I like to keep things as simple as possible, and Thieves helps me do that.
It already has a heavenly smell (think Christmas-cinnamon, lemon, eucalyptus…), but I like to add different oils in different seasons to change it up a little bit. In the fall, one of my favorites is adding some orange, nutmeg, and clove to make it smell like pumpkin spice! I’ve dropped that recipe below, so keep it handy!
